Lord John Browne

 Lord Browne has more than 50 years of experience spanning energy, technology, and climate investing. He is a champion of the arts and a philanthropist, supporting a wide range of causes in the arts, science and engineering, education, the environment and human rights.

He was the Chief Executive Officer of BP plc from 1995 to 2007 during the Company’s unprecedented period of expansion and diversification. During this period, Lord Browne created the world’s first supermajor through a series of mergers and acquisitions. In 1997 he delivered a landmark speech at Stanford University in which he became the first oil and gas CEO to acknowledge the risk posed by climate change, and to pledge to do something about it. Subsequently, he oversaw the establishment of BP’s significant renewable and alternative energy business. He has worked in companies that advance the energy transition ever since.

A Cambridge University alumnus, supporter and donor, Lord Browne has announced that he is running in the election for Chancellorship of the University of Cambridge.
