Lord John Browne Challenges Harvard to Lead the Charge in Global Climate Change Response and Energy Transition

Lord John Browne, Chairman and Co-founder of BeyondNetZero, General Atlantic’s climate growth equity fund, and former Chief Executive of BP, delivered a seminar at Harvard University, hosted by the Belfer Centre for Science and International Affairs in partnership with the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability. The event served as a powerful call to action, emphasising Harvard’s unique capacity to lead the fight against climate change and shape the global energy transition. 

The seminar, moderated by Meghan O’Sullivan, Director of the Belfer Centre and Jeane Kirkpatrick, Professor of the Practice of International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School, provided a platform for Lord Browne to share critical insights on the path to net zero emissions and the multifaceted approach required to achieve it. Browne offered a comprehensive roadmap for addressing climate change, blending pragmatism with optimism to inspire the Harvard community and beyond. 

Lord Browne began by exploring the urgent challenges of decarbonising the global economy, highlighting the importance of deploying current technologies while investing in innovative solutions. Among the strategies discussed were decarbonising natural gas through carbon capture and storage, harnessing the potential of green hydrogen in industrial applications like steel production, and adopting sustainable agricultural practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These examples illustrated how different sectors can contribute to the collective effort required to combat climate change. 

A key theme of the seminar was the need for realistic expectations about the pace of change. Browne cautioned against the belief that a rapid energy transition is achievable without incremental progress and sustained efforts. Instead, he advocated for setting achievable milestones and leveraging a pragmatic approach to ensure long-term success.
